For two years now, in the Foundation we have been working on one of the central projects of our Direct Action branch, the Green Trail Concept. It is an initiative to develop a sustainability certificate for trail running races, in which the economic, social, and environmental aspects of the race are evaluated.

Today, we bring you news that reflects the progress and evolution of the project, as the iconic Zegama-Aizkorri race has joined in the development and improvement of the certification. The race will take place on May 24th and 25th, and the Foundation team will travel there to test the effectiveness of the certification and the tool on-site. This is an unparalleled opportunity to work on improving the tool and its interface, and thus offer this opportunity to other trail running races around the world, of different distances and audiences.

The Green Trail Concept: A personalized approach

Using GTC not only helps organizers assess the sustainability of their race, but also provides a broader and more comprehensive perspective on the weak or areas of improvement of the event, as well as the strengths. The application has been developed including a set of factors that make the whole process, from start to finish, highly personalized. During the response process, the organizer will receive a series of guides to comfortably answer the questions. Once the tool’s evaluation is obtained, recommendations will be made for improvement based on the answers provided throughout the questionnaire.

A Milestone for Sustainable Trail Running

Thus, Zegama-Aizkorri Mendi Maratoia will be a great opportunity for Green Trail Concept to put itself to the test. Both the public and the runners will have the chance to learn more about this initiative. This collaboration reinforces the commitment of both organizations to sustainable event management. On one hand, Zegama will actively participate in improving the certification tool, providing feedback and data to enhance its efficiency. In return, GTC will support Zegama in implementing sustainable practices and increasing awareness within the trail running community.

All of this has been documented in an MoU signed by both parties with the commitment to work together towards a more sustainable trail running.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this change! Join us at the GTC stand in Zegama on May 24th and discover how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future for trail running.
